Mission and Social Justice
As Christians, we are called to respond to injustice. Our Mission and Social Justice Commission seeks to:
Act on our Christian Faith by raising the congregation’s awareness of social justice issues through education, and by promoting individual and collective action. We will provide Christian service opportunities that address social injustice, promote community building and facilitate faith development.
Mission and Social Justice efforts include hands-on service projects, such as serving meals at homeless shelters, participating in MassReleaf tree planting projects, youth mission trips, and participating in the Boston Pride Parade, the Newton Walk for the World, the Walk for Hunger, and the Low-Carbon Diet, among others.
At Eliot, our giving comes from the generosity of the congregation. A portion of our annual budget is used to support local and international organizations committed to working to end hunger, homelessness and economic injustice and to promote peace building and sound environmental stewardship. Last year we supported twenty-three organizations working in places like Newton, Boston and Biloxi; Belize, Jordan, and Malawi among others. View the ministries we support.
Eliot is a strong supporter of the wider ministries of the United Church of Christ. Each year, we contribute half of our Mission and Social Justice monies to the UCC through Our Church’s Wider Mission, (OCWM). For more information on OCWM, see http://ucc.org/ocwm/. Eliot strives to weave service and advocacy into the fabric of all we do as a community of faith. By doing so se hope to cultivate an awareness that doing justice, serving others and working for change in our world is a central part of being a Christian.
